A statement is only worth writing if it is honest about the gaps, so this one names them.
What we are aiming at
This website is intended to meet WCAG 2.2 at level AA. That is the standard UK public sector bodies are held to, and we see no reason to hold ourselves to less.
What that means here
- Text and interface colours meet or exceed a 4.5 to 1 contrast ratio in both the light and dark colour schemes.
- Every control is reachable and operable by keyboard, with a visible focus outline that is never suppressed.
- The page works without JavaScript. The interactive lifecycle panel on the homepage is built from native radio controls, so it responds to arrow keys and is announced correctly by screen readers.
- Headings run in order with no skipped levels, and page regions are marked up as landmarks.
- Animation is disabled entirely when your device is set to reduce motion.
- Text reflows to a single column without horizontal scrolling down to 320 pixels, and stays readable when zoomed to 400 per cent.
- Interactive targets are at least 44 by 44 pixels.
- Form fields have permanent visible labels rather than disappearing placeholder text.
Where it falls short
Being specific is more useful than claiming full compliance, so:
- Body text is set in a variable font loaded from a third party. If that request is blocked the fallback face has slightly different metrics, which changes line lengths a little.
- The contents list on long pages becomes sticky on wide screens. At very short viewport heights it can occupy more of the screen than is comfortable.
- We have tested with keyboard navigation, browser zoom and automated tooling. We have not yet completed a full audit with users of assistive technology. When we do, this page will say so and will list what came out of it.
